My images were taken all over Harlow, mainly on the way to a club outside of college. So i took pictures along the way there and back. I then took images on the way to town which came out really dark but they were very good.

My creative skills have grown, I reckon because working independently on these tasks has helped me to understand the full meaning of pictures and why we take them. I have also learnt how to use PhotoShop properly, enough to let me edit the things i wanted to which helped.  I am amazed that didn’t struggle with the camera out of college, with my friends too.

I had to plan when i was going to take the camera out and then decide what category i was going to take pictures of. I took a while on deciding as i really didn’t know what to choose so in the end i took picture of everything to do with all categories so i could choose at the end and see what people recommended would be better.I wanted to take pictures of everything because i couldn’t decide between portraits and landscapes mainly so this module helped me get an idea of what i like taking pictures of.

I have shown people in my class aged 16-19 years of age my images and collected feedback. Most people liked this image the most as it is bright and colourful. They weren’t too sure how I took this image and how I edited it. They liked the setting and thought it was a clever idea.

Most people thought this picture was pretty, very red and bright. Looked like it would be decorative and set a perfect scene.

Some people thought that this image was difficult to work out and understand. That it is really scary and haunted. They said that it looks dangerous and that no one should go there.

I think as a photographer my strengths are that i have more knowledge of using PhotoShop and that i am more capable of taking good, detailed pictures now. I understand why people take detailed pictures to represent certain things or to show emotion and effect. I reckon my weaknesses as a photographer would be that I am not perfectly ready to use PhotoShop, I can’t create amazing pictures just yet but I’m sure i can keep learning. I also don’t think my skills with a camera are excellent so i’d have to keep practicing.

So overall i think i have done really good, i have fell behind at times and caught up. I am proud of my work, i reckon it is good. I never though i would do architectural/urban landscapes for a magazine genre of pictures. These images would be used in magazines, possibly galleries as these could be known as spooky art or even newspapers to show the areas of Harlow at night. I don’t think these images would be used in books because they just wouldn’t be suitable.

My first picture is of a bungalow with a tree centered between it. I took this picture because it was an interesting landscape. I thought it would capture  certain heights to show a big building and a detailed tree. I have also edited this picture to make it stand out more. I have made the brightness low and the contrast slightly high to show the cool effects.

My second picture I took is of a bridge in the middle of the woods, this picture looks really eerie and sets a haunted scene. Around the edges of the bridge you can see plants and leaves and all the colours are very dark. You can just slightly see the bridge which makes it difficult to understand the full meaning of this picture. You have to look in depth at this image to find out the importance of it.

My third image is of some bushes and plants but with a huge wooden hand in between the leaves. I took this picture because it is definitely  interesting and I thought it looked really cool. I have edited this picture, I have toned the greens up and made everything different tones of green. There is a post at the front too which makes it look big compared to the bushes, there is also a post in the far distance. You only see half the hand as well, just the fingers, this picture could come under a weird category.

My fourth picture is a tree which has red berries on. when I took this picture is was really dark and the red was very faint so I edited it to show the berries up, and they are now bright red. This tree stands out alongside a main road  and a building. The main road, car lights are blurred which looks really good.

The fact that the tree is bright and lit up and the background is pretty much, black, looks spooky. I took this picture and the tree is very landscape and because of the lights from the cars in the background stand out.

My fifth picture is looking upright at a tree really close around a lamp post. You see leaves which take up most of the image except for one corner which is black and cloudy. I have edited this image to make the lamp post light pink and yellow. The leaves were golden brown, yellow, green, dark brown and orange. I took this picture because I loved the colours and the effect it gives to people but now I have changed the colour of the leaves to black, green, orange and grey to give more effect as this is now really different. It falls under the same category as my other pictures, which is scary/horror.

My final image is looking upright at a tree in the woods. This image is not the same as the previous image I took. This tree has a wide bark and more branches. Looking upwards, you see more leaves in the distance just going on and on but in a faint way. I edited this picture to turn it negative but then added slight orange and purple into the leaves. The bark is softly green and glowing.  This is an eye capturing image because it is bright and definitely attracts attention.

All my images do link to horror but for a magazine it could be for urban landscapes such as ‘Harlow at Night’ or ‘Dangerous Places’. These images could also be used in Architectural magazines but to show scary places.

Aperture is the diameter of the lens. The larger the diameter of the aperture, the more light reaches the image sensor. The aperture is usually shown in numbers. There is maximum aperture which  shows the maximum aperture, aperture range which shows you the maximum and minimum aperture and maximum wide angle which gives you the maximum aperture wide angle.

Shutter Speed

Shutter speed is measured in seconds. Shutter speed is the length of time that your image sensor ‘sees’ the scene you’re attempting to capture. If you speed up the shutter speed you’ll need to increase Aperture or make the ISO faster to compensate for it.

Focus Point

The focus point of the lens is where all the light is reflected from an object is in focus. This is also called the image point.

Focal Length

This is a measurement which indicates the  angle of view of a specific combination of camera lens and film or sensor size. It is a  measure of how strongly it focuses.When a photographic lens is set to “infinity”, its rear nodal point is separated from the sensor or film, at the focal point, by the lens’s focal length. Objects far away from the camera then produce sharp images on the sensor or film, which is also at the image plane. Photographers sometimes refer to the image plane as the focal plane; these planes coincide when the object is at infinity, but for closer objects the focal plane is fixed, relative to the lens, and the image plane moves, by the standard optical definitions.

ISO

ISO is the abbreviation for International Organization of Standardization. The letters ISO on your camera settings refer to the film speed. This is an archive file also known as a disc image which allows you to save to an extension file.

Digital Manipulation

Digital manipulation for example is photoshop techniques such as cropping, colour correction, lassos and clone stamps. Digital manipulation gives you the opportunity to change your pictures therefore giving you the potential to create an illusion. You can make things black and white, sepia and negative. You can mix and match pictures and change shapes.

The Difference Between Film and Digital Cameras

Digital is far more convenient and offers great quality for photojournalism and portraits, and film is king for large prints and reproduction where textures in nature and landscapes are important. There are many differences including The sensor, The Capacity, The Feedback, Shooting Angles, Correcting photos, Changing conditions and The quality.

The Sensor

Film camera’s, A film sensitive to light is placed behind the lens. When a photo is taken the shutter opens for a certain amount of time and light hits the film. The film has to be rolled to take a new picture and a fresh new film is placed behind the lens. With digital cameras a fixed electronic sensor is situated behind the lens. The sensor is built from little light sensitive sensors each representing a pixels. All the pixels create one photo, to take a new photo the photo is saved on to a digital media. The main difference is the field depth with digital sensors, are smaller in size, and the depth of the field for a film camera will be much higher.

Shooting angles

Digital cameras don’t require you to have your eye glued to the viewfinder. Overhead shots where you raise the camers above your head are much easier to do since  you can still see what the camera is shooting by looking up at its LCD screen.
Film cameras need you to look carefully into the viewfinder to get a perfect shot which would probably take much longer to do.

The Capacity

Digital cameras can hold hundreds and sometimes thousands of photos on a single media, changing the memory card is quick and easy, which means a digital cameras have infinite capacity. Unlike film cameras as they are very limited, and changing the film takes time and is not easy to in certain situations, so therefore professional journalists carry a few cameras and change camera, so they dont miss a shooting opportunity.

Quality

Film photography has its advantages, but the film is no longer superier to digital, as the digital cameras have evolved, therefore it is better in many ways than film. Digital cameras high capacity, has not cost and instant adaptability to changing conditions, therefore photographers are able to produce better compositions and are able to experiment more.

Flash

In photography, many different types of flashes can be used to create the perfect picture. A flashbulb is a device which produces a lot of light as a result of the combustion of material in an oxygen rich atmosphere.A flashbulb can only be flashed once. Larger flashbulbs can produce more light. Flashbulbs provide a lot of light which can be useful to high speed photography.

Tripod

A tripod prevents the camera from moving and stops it from shaking when you are trying to take pictures. They are also useful in producing framing of an image. The tripod is always necessary for photography as well as video recording as it keeps everything still.

There are many different styles in photography such as shots like portrait, fine art, sport and architectural but my two prefered styles are Fashion and Landscapes such as nature.

Charlie Waite is a landscape photographer who loves the atmosphere from a  beautiful landscape, his distinctive style combines graphic finesse with an almost spiritual quality of calm and serenity.

His pictures are eye catching and beautiful. They represent some feelings of coldness of sunlight, a sence of relax or tension.

This is one of Charlie Waites images which captures a gorgeous beach in England. The colour scheme here are very delicate, calm colours such as the sky is a lilac colour, the sea is  a mixture between and rusty blue and grey. The rocks are close to the camera as they are the biggest thing out of the picture.

I also love the effect he’s created by the sky and sea as the sky takes up the top half of the image and the sea takes up the bottom half of the image therefore making our eyes lead towards the middle of the image and half way between the sea and sky, there is a triangular rock which can attract our attention.

This picture can be split into rows to show the image in different sections. This is the rule of thirds to help show how this would look split up and in more depth and detail.

The shot used is from a distance usually, the certain lenses zoom in to create effect. Different lenses give different effects to the image. The camera angle is a long shot, to capture the whole picture. The line of thirds is included here as the picture is as if it is on a symmetrical line making the image equal in all corners.

This image gives a relaxing feeling towards the viewers as it is a beach and it gives us the image of a sea breeze and the tide sounds.

Lanscape techniques include the wide range of materials we use to take amazing images. We have the nature around us and the scenery to create a distictive look. Even if it’s initial planning to finishing touches, a lovely landscape picture can be captured.

This shot is taken froma  distant to get the full image in focus. This shows the whole landscape and all the features in it.

Charlie Waite has taken this picture with a photographic lens to be able to zoom in and zoom out, in this picture he has taken this shot, straight ahead.

Julia Kennedy is an amazing fashion photographer who expresses her emotions through fashion. Her images capture the extraordinary clothes that the models wear. The models also have a shocking expression on their faces to represent that what they are wearing is unique.

This image is quite colourless apart from the clothes she is wearing as they are bright colours. That immediately catches our eye this image, you see black and white stripes which make her hair and clothes stand out from the background. Her face is drawn to stand out by the thickness of her makeup around her eyes therefore showing the expression on her face.

This image can represent an emotion where she wants to be different, stand out and represent a serious look and bright clothes.

The fashion pictures use special techniques which include the model posing, the background setting and the special lighting.

This shot is at eye level but she is looking down to the camera, she is also slightly sideways and her arm is shown to the camera  and the other one is not.  this shows she is not direct, yet she is not off-guard.

The shots are quite close up for fashion photography because this helps us see their emotion and facial expressions. The lenses are used to be clear to show detail.  The lenses can be changed in many ways for fashion, possibly blurred to give effect on certain purposes.

Charlie Waite and Julia Kennedy both take interesting images but of completely different things. Charlie Waite Captures a feeling with his images and he makes people have an insight to what he wants the people to see in the photo. As of, Julia Kennedy captures emotion and she shows that people are unique in the clothes they wear. She shows that outstanding clothes and makeup can bring out someone different in yourself. They both have their views on their images and show them in their style.
